Elastomeric paint is an excellent exterior paint. It provides a tough and thick coating that also waterproofs most surfaces. Elastomeric coating is also resistant to heat, cold, sunlight, and rain. It can be said that it is the better exterior finish even compared to the best acrylic paint. It can be applied to stucco, masonry, concrete blocks and other surfaces and some are compatible with wood.

Q: We have a stucco bungalow that we painted with Towerthon elastomeric paint in the late s, and it has endured our rainy climate well here in Vancouver, Canada. However, it is time to repaint, and we have received different advice from different painters. I would appreciate it if you could give us some guidance in this matter. One painter suggested painting over the original elastomeric with latex paint. He said not to use elastomeric again.
An elastomer is a polymer with viscoelasticity i. Elastomers are amorphous polymers maintained above their glass transition temperature , so that considerable molecular reconformation , without breaking of covalent bonds , is feasible. Their primary uses are for seals , adhesives and molded flexible parts. Application areas for different types of rubber are manifold and cover segments as diverse as tires, soles for shoes , and damping and insulating elements. Rubber-like solids with elastic properties are called elastomers.
Weathered elastomeric coatings may be refreshed by application of a quality exterior acrylic latex paint. Proper surface preparation must be done, and the paint applied under appropriate conditions. Skip to main content. Diamond Vogel.
